Betekenis

Betekent dit woord echt "beer" of toch eerder "miereneter"? De noordelijke tamandua komt van nature voor in Yucatan, maar ik ben me niet bewust van een berensoort die daar voorkomt.

Manoro82 According to this article, "saam jo'ol" would refer to Eira barbara . In Dutch this species would not be considered a (kind of) bear; the correct name would be "aira" or "zwartbruine veelvraat".

As this might be the most bear-like animal with a name in the Mayan language, this could explain why the word is also used to signify "bear" as vernacular names don't necessarily follow taxonomy.

The article also states that the Yucatec Mayan name could be translated as "white head" (maybe more precisely: sand-coloured head?). This might explain why the name would also apply to the Northern Tamandua.

Schrijfwijze

Is alleen de spelling met "aa" correct, of kan het woord ook met één "a" worden geschreven, zoals in Diccionario introductorio Español-Maya : Maya-Español? Is er een betrouwbare bron voor de spelling met één a?
