250 DISEASES OF THE INTESTINES. Prognosis.—The prognosis depends ui)on the vitality at the time ofsunstroke. We must differentiate this condition from meningitis. Thesuddenness of the attack following exposure to the sun will usually aidin making a diagnosis. The majority of cases seen by me recovered. Occa-sionally a fatal case was encountered, especially in bottle-fed infants.

Fig. 68.—Insolation (Heat-stroke),York City. T^pe of midsummer cases in New(Original.) This infant (Fig. 68), brought to my clinic July, 1909, weighed 5 pounds 6ounces. He \yas a bottle-fed infant, reared on condensed milk. He was nine weeksold. Vomited after each feeding, had greenish, mucous, sour-smelling stools, eyeryhalf-hour and oftener. There was eczema between the thighs from excoriation andacid stools. The child weighed 6I/2 pounds at birth, and was a full-term baby. The child was pulseless. The extremities were cold and coyered with a clammyperspiration. The temperature was subnormal—97° F. The fontanel was de-pressed. The heart sounds were barely audible. The mouth, tongue, and lips wereyery dry; food and water were refused. Spirits of camphor, 5 drops, was injectedhypodermically; a mustard foot-bath was ordered. The child died fifteen minuteslater. DYSENTERY. 251 Diagnosis.—Cholera infantum, marasmus, due Ixj malassimilation of Uxjd; im-proper food to commence with.
